Common Clutch Issues: Symptoms and Solutions

Share Post:

A vehicle owner’s worst fear is being stranded on the road due to a sudden breakdown. Picture this: you’re cruising along the highway, music blasting, feeling the wind against your face, when you suddenly notice that something’s off. Your car’s gears are not shifting smoothly, or perhaps there’s a burning smell. These could be signs of clutch issues. Don’t worry; we’re here to guide you through. Drawing from our experience, clutch problems are common, but they’re also fixable. Let’s dive deep into the world of clutches and identify the possible signs of wear and tear and how you can address them.

1. Slipping Clutch

This is one of the most common clutch problems associated with a clutch i.e. is when the clutch starts to slip. Clutch slippage is when the clutch disengages too quickly, the engine revs, but the car doesn’t speed up proportionally. There is momentary loss of acceleration caused by a feeling of a ‘slipping’ clutch

Symptoms:

  • Difficulty in accelerating
  • Burning smell

Unattended and continuous slippage of a clutch could result in failure of other components associated with your clutch system

Solution:

This can be caused by a worn-out clutch plate or due to oil contamination. As per our expertise, the best remedy is to replace the clutch plate or fix any oil leaks and have the flywheel skimmed or replaced.

2. Stiff Clutch Pedal

A clutch pedal that’s hard to press or feels “stiff” is indicative of issues with the hydraulic system or clutch cable.

Symptoms:

  • Hard clutch pedal
  • Difficulty in shifting gears

A worn or perished rubber hydraulic line results in “bulging” which means less pressure is being used to actuate the slave cylinder which in turn could cause the vehicle not to select gears.

Solution

bleeding and or replacing the hydraulic fluid could possibly resolve or can often solve the problem. If not, the clutch cable may be at fault and might require replacement.

Hydraulic fluid is hydroscopic which means it attracts moisture, thereby lowering the boiling point. Problems could only become evident when the vehicle is at operating temperature. Moisture in the hydraulic line also results in premature failure of the components.

3. Noisy Clutch

Hearing strange noises when using the clutch is a tell-tale sign of potential problems.

Symptoms:

  • Grinding or squealing noises when pressing the clutch pedal
  • Rattling noise when the clutch pedal is pressed in
  • Rattling noise from the gearbox area whilst driving

Solution

Replacing the clutch release bearing or the pilot bearing (depending on which is faulty) usually eliminates these noises.

Pressure plate springs could be worn or broken which means a clutch kit replacement .

4. Clutch Doesn’t Engage and Disengage Properly

If you find it challenging to put your car into gear and take it out of gear, it’s possible that the clutch isn’t engaging and disengaging properly.

Symptoms:

  • The car doesn’t move even when the clutch is released
  • Grinding noises when trying to change gears

Solution:

This is often due to a malfunctioning clutch master or slave cylinder. Replacing these components typically resolves the issue. This could also be the results of the release bearing not sliding freely due to being “sticky”

FAQs about Clutch Issues

Q: How often should I replace my clutch?

A: This varies depending on driving habits and conditions.

Q: Is it expensive to replace a clutch?

A: The cost can vary depending on the vehicle’s make and model. However, we determined through our tests that preventing further damage by addressing clutch issues early can save on bigger repair costs later.

Q: Can I drive with a faulty clutch?

A: While it might be possible, it’s not advisable. Based on our observations, driving with a malfunctioning clutch can cause more damage to other components.

Q: How often should my hydraulic fluid be replaced?

A: As per the manufacturers specifications however we utilize an electronic tester that measure the moisture content due to the fact each vehicle is exposed to different driving conditions
